The Cancer Center of Idaho (CCI) is a Northwest innovator and leader in radiation therapy technology.  We introduced Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT){view animation} to Boise in 2003.  As successful and technologically superior as the IMRT system has proven, the Cancer Center of Idaho was also one of the Northwest’s first treatment facilities to utilize  BAT - ultrasound-based image guidance targeting for added cancer treatment effectiveness.

How does IMRT technology work?

Unlike conventional radiation therapy, IMRT projects thousands of radiation beams that conform to the size and shape of the cancerous area by varying angles and the intensity of the beams up to a full 360 degree radius around the patient's body.

By using an advanced three-dimensional modeling system combined with a CT scan system, the CCI team develops a map that includes the cancerous areas, as well as the healthy tissue and body structures near the cancerous areas. From this map, a treatment plan is generated, which focuses the radiation more precisely, allows the CCI team to intensify radiation dosage to the cancerous areas, and minimize damage to the healthy tissue nearby.

The BAT - ultrasound-based image guidance targeting technology adds an additional level of precision to the IMRT treatment process. For those situations where the cancerous areas might change position, it is critical to identify the target area at the time of each treatment session. For example, the location of a prostate will vary, depending on the current position and contents of the patient's bladder. This technique is also used for targeting cancerous areas in the breast, pancreas, liver and bladder, to ensure that the cancerous area is targeted accurately during each treatment session.
